What is Spiritual Direction?

"Spiritual direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director — the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul." (Thomas Merton)

"We are like jars of river water all shaken up. We need to sit still long enough so the sediment can settle and the water can become clear." Agniezka Tennant

Spiritual Direction is a one-on-one professional relationship in which a Spiritual Director accompanies a person through listening, questioning, praying and noticing the movement of God, or of the Sacred, in the midst of one's daily life. A Spiritual Director is professionally trained to companion another, listening to and journeying through that person's life story as it unfolds, with an ear for the movement of God, of the Holy.

"Spiritual Director" as a title is a bit of a misnomer. Actually, God is the director. The Spiritual Director only helps a person feel God's nudging and hear God's voice through encouraging the spiritual disciplines of silence, solitude, noticing, gratitude and love. During monthly one-on-one meetings, a peaceful, sacred space is created where the two can mutually explore the client's (directee's) experiences. At its simplest, Spiritual Direction offers a directee a place of tremendous acceptance and love.

Who Can Benefit From Spiritual Direction?

Anyone who desires closer contact with God, with the Sacred, can benefit from Spiritual Direction. Some come to Spiritual Direction as a result of a trauma. Some come and do not know why; they just sense an ache, a holy longing. Some may have a desire to intensify their relationship with God in ways that are different than the customary methods of organized religion. Others may be disillusioned by past religious experiences, yet still have a desire to know God personally. Some seek a deeper faith, a spiritual work of greater intimacy with God. Some aim for a greater sense of Presence in their lives. Still others might seek a Spiritual Director because they have decided to be intentional about building the discipline of a contemplative life and want someone to journey with them through this process.
